If you’ve recently invested in one of our premium men’s hairpieces, there are tasks you’ll need to undertake to prepare for its attachment.
Along with preparing your scalp and finding the right adhesive for your needs, you’ll need to ensure your natural hair matches your hairpiece to ensure the perfect blend and a truly discreet finish. Here we share our top tips for doing just that so you can wear your hairpiece with complete confidence.
Whether you’re using a hairpiece to conceal the symptoms of male pattern baldness or looking for temporary coverage whilst you recover from traction alopecia, matching your hairpiece with your natural hair is the best way to ensure a look that’s natural and realistic.
Hair replacement systems after all only provide partial coverage, leaving the sides of the head and your natural hair on display. Choosing the right dye for you may involve a bit of trial and error. But instead of looking for the perfect colour match, select a shade that blends with your hairpiece.
Many hairpiece wearers choose to test their chosen dye on a section of the hair before committing to full head application.
If you really want a match made in heaven, consider dyeing your wig as well as your natural hair. If you’ve purchased a synthetic hairpiece rather than a human hair replacement system however, dyeing your wig is not recommended. Here Lauren and Vanessa explain why:
“Another vital ingredient in hair dye is peroxide because it removes the pre-existing color to ‘make room’ for the new one. Unlike natural hair, synthetic hair doesn’t have a cuticle nor the cortex where the pigment can be deposited. Even more so, the chemicals found in regular hair dye, like ammonia, could damage synthetic hair.”
Whether dyeing your natural hair, your wig or both, how you take care of your hair afterwards will make all the difference. Taking care of coloured hair is quite the learning curve. Dyed natural hair and wigs need hydration and frequent touch-ups to stay as fresh and fabulous as they should be.
A word about washing, however; avoid washing your coloured hair or wig for a few days after dyeing. Ammonia-based dyes need time to settle into and penetrate the hair shaft. We advise leaving at least 72 hours between colouring and washing.
Sulfate-free shampoos are a great choice for maintaining colour. The intense cleansing action of sulfates can strip your hair of both colour and moisture, leaving dyed hair looking a little lacklustre in no time at all. Opt for shampoos and conditioners that are gentler and made from natural, organic ingredients for the best care.
